8 Guaranteed Ways to Ruin Your Social Media Reputation

1. Broadcast Spam

The easiest way to ruin your company’s social media reputation is to tweet spammy links or Facebook updates related to selling your stuff. Constantly. Frequently. Everyday. In no matter of time at all people will close their ears to what you have to say, letting your avatar drift by in the twitter stream. At worst they’ll block your account and unfriend you.

Oh, and as a bonus tip: sign up for as many apps that blast out those spammy “Hey, I just signed up with NAME OF SERVICE” messages. People hate those, so they’ll definitely help you ruin your reputation.

2. Do Anything to Get Likes

Yup, it doesn’t matter who, just follow anyone or anything all the time. A robot, a porn site, a spammer, collect them all. You just want other people to see that you have a bazillion online followers and friends.

3. Never Have a Conversation

If you want to ruin your social media reputation definitely don’t bother helping people, sharing cool stuff, answering questions or being friendly; just blast them with your best sales pitch, spam or direct messages at least once a day. That’s the way to go.

4. Send Direct Messages Asking Followers to Promote Your Stuff

Every time you update your business blog, release a new podcast or vlog, DM your followers on Twitter asking them to check out your blog and promote it to all their friends. Several times a day. There’s nothing like generic, spammy DMs to turn people off you.

5. Automate Your Online Social Media Activity

Get ahold of some of those great tools that let you automatically update a thousand social media sites at once and ensure you never have to actually visit them and spend time hanging out. Forget that on social media people expect you to actually be around to respond to a tweet or Facebook status update. Just automate and schedule the whole thing and let your words take care of things for you. You’ll ruin your social media reputation very quickly if people get the idea you’re not actually bothered to participate.

6. Retweet, Share and Promote EVERYTHING that Looks Interesting

Don’t worry about checking out links or recommendations posted and tweeted by others. Just retweet them, repost and endorse them. As soon as people realise you don’t vet the links or moronically tweet without consideration they’ll soon give up on you. Better still, retweet some spam just once and it should do the trick and crucify your social media reputation.

7. Forget to Disclose Business Links

Secrecy is social media failure’s best friend! Recommend the products you’re pimping on your business blog for customers, without actually mentioning you’ve been paid to do this and you can kiss goodbye to your social media reputation so you never have to worry about it again!

8. Use a Really Hot, Provocative Avatar

Yes, make sure your profile picture on all your social media sites is a bit dodgy and people won’t even have to read your crap you realise your business sucks. The picture will do the talking for you.

Well, I suppose it depends on what kind of reputation you want. But if you’re running a business, and you’re tweeting for your business, I completely agree with you! Well written as always!

Thanks Jörgen. It was meant as a bit of fun, but with a serious side to it. There are just so many posts recommending what to do, so I thought I’d turn it around.

    Hi Jon, great post!

I would add to point 5 that every post on your social media profile begins with New Blog Post:

Also, integrating YouTube so each time you upload a video it broadcasts to Twitter and Facebook – and then you add 50 at one time.

Fun stuff! Thanks for the post.

      Hello Jamie,
I got the inspiration for #8 from your brilliant blog post the other day about gravatars. I’ll put in a link when I get back to my desk. This was written over lunch in between meetings. Not easy to edit on my iPhone now.

      Thanks for connecting! J.
