Google is the Front Page of Your Website

The first page of your website?

The first page of your website?

No matter how much money you spend on branding your website, making it look good and easy to read, Google is probably your front page.

More often than not it’s where people stumble across you for the first time after typing something in Google and seeing your name in the search engine results.

Because of this, it’s imperative that you spend some time and energy (and probably money) making sure Google shows the best of you.

In my case, “jon buscall” will get you this website as the first result in google and it says exactly what I do for a living and not all the other hobbies and things I do:

What Google says about me

What Google says about me

.

It hasn’t always said this about me. And sometimes other people have had held the first result for my name. But my tactic has been to use a blog over the years to build page rank and ensure I come as high up in the results as possible Blogs are ideal ways to change what Google says about you.

That’s why although I nurture my Twitter account and Facebook profile to build online connections, I still write content on this website to have some control in the way my business is presented online.

If you haven’t done research on what Google says about your brand or name, you should probably give it a go. And if it says something you don’t like, or something’s missing, then you should think about doing something about it. Quickly.

Repair Your Personal Brand

Even if you’re not a company, Google can affect the way your “personal brand” is seen. CEOs like this one are increasingly using the Net (google?) to find out everything about you if you apply for a job.

Starting a good, professional blog can show people what you’re really about and repair some of the damage.

If you’re set on repairing your personal brand, I recommend you buy a domain that is as close to your name as possible (i.e. that’s why I have www.jonbuscall.com) and self-hosting WordPress.

Most web hosting solutions offer one-click installs nowadays and I can certainly recommend MediaTemple.
