Quick! Get Your .Co Keyword Domain

Buffer

So today sees the launch of the .Co domains. And, yup, I’ve bought mine already. Well, not all the ones I’d like to get but certainly jontusumedia.co – where my new corporate site is going sometime in August or September.

.Co is going to be massive for businesses. I’m sure of that. Local country domains are, of course, still very significant but .info, .tv, .me, .tel, just don’t seem to have the same international business zing as a dot Co. Think about it: I’m sure that if Charles Dickens was writing Bleak House today Mr Jarndyce’s website would be jarmdyceandjarndyce.co – the dot co echoing their partnership.

No, Really. Get Your Keyword .Co

If you can still get it, I’d recommend you go get a domain with your keyword(s) at .co.

Google seems to love it if your service or product is in your url. Especially small business sites whose brands don’t attract the same kind of attention as established international brands.

Imagine you’re in the PR or Internet Marketing business: pr-firm.co OR internet-marketing.co would be amazing! You’d have a shot of getting much closer to the top of Google for really competitive words. Trouble is, I’m sure the very best domains have gone already in the initial (and expensive) land rush! I’m sure, however, there are lots of possibilities still out there.

For example, if a client wanted to target the keywords “English Translator Paris” – assuming the domain “english translator.com” had already gone – one option would be to go for the domain name “english-translator.co” and then use a tagline with “Paris” in it.

By building a site at “english-translator.co” and using a tagline which includes “paris”, Sam Smith is much likely to get more organic search traffic than “Sam Smith – English Translator, Paris” at sam-smith.com.

My .Com Will Suffice!

Fair enough. But even if you’ve got an established website at .com it could still be worth getting a .co domain for a particular product or service you offer. There’s nothing to say it has to be a full corporate site. It could be a landing page for something you’re selling.

So what about you?

Have you got the domain that will help drive traffic to your site? Or do you think it’s just a load of hype!

I'm concerned that it is so close to .com. I don't see the difference/benefit for it. But maybe I'm wrong? (in fact, it is possible that I am wrong) But, I have always seen that a normal website should be .com, charities should be .org and education sites should be .edu.

I don’t think it’s about competing with a .com; however, I do see it as a brilliant complement to an existing domain. Primarily because it has a strong business association and can be used to target keywords. For example, in your case you could get: blog-consultant.co
