We don’t have a Facebook Page at Jontus Media. And as it stands we’re not likely to, to be honest.
It’s not that I don’t think they’re worthwhile or important for business use –especially in the B2B sector. I’ve first hand experience running a couple of Pages for businesses and I’ve actually found them very successful community building (ok, lets be honest: marketing) tools.
Still, I think there are good reasons to avoid them like the plague. So in true devil’s advocate fashion, as is my want, without further ado here are my 10 reasons for you to buck the trend and not have a Business Facebook Page.
Give it a miss if:
1) You’re a small business that doesn’t have the manpower to juggle a blog, a Twitter account AND a FB Page.
2) You don’t want to spread yourself too thinly across social media sites. Better to engage 100% on Twitter and your blog, rather than try and cram in yet another social media channel.
3) You don’t fancy putting a widget on your website inviting people to join your Facebook Page – like 50 other companies with only 9 fans.
4) You don’t like Facebook’s privacy policies and the speed at which they change them without telling you.
5) You figure there’s not that much marketing value in putting your efforts into getting people to simply “Like” your brand. It’s not like people really want to hang out and get to know you. Unless you’re a really sexy brand, that is.
6) You want more control over the design and functionality of your online outposts.
7) You’d prefer to keep your blog as your resource site for customers.
8.) You’re not a B2C so you doubt anyone will get excited by competitions or giveaways.
9) Your demographic – Generation Y, possibly – are leaving Facebook.
10) You’ve believe that Mulder & Scully are investigating how Facebook are talking over the world.

other than the adult diapers thing… which might actually be popular with the changing FB demographic, reasons to NOT have your business on there could include time required to invest in customer research, acquisition and relationship building… much easier to search, find and engage on Twitter, leading to blog ;~D
I'm with you on this one, Bonnie. I like the way Twitter helps you funnel prospects into your pillar content and landing pages. And blogs attract visitors through their natural SEO benefits.
With the imminent arrival of the Facebook movie I'm predicting a backlash.

I have a new B2B business, and I'm trying to justify why I should bother with a Facebook page when “everyone is doing it.” You're right: It's better to do one or two social media outlets well than to do a poor job across four or five. I'm off to reconsider how I'm managing the social media for one of my community organizations, too!
