Teach Your Customers What You Know

video1One of the best things you can do on your website is to teach customers how to solve the problems they go online to find answers for.

Let’s say, for example, that a solo entrepreneur is starting to build their own website with WordPress. They stumble upon the Genesis Framework and the excellent premium themes by StudioPress; they buy one and then start to customize it. Trouble is, they can’t figure out how to create different sidebars for different pages on their business site.

So they go online to try to solve this specific problem and stumble upon a video I’ve made showcasing the Simple Sidebars Plugin. [Read more...]

A Voice Brings a New Level to Your Words

Regular visitors to this site will know that I’m an avid podcaster. I’ve had the smart and savvy Jamie Wallace on the show twice now and I’ve been encouraging her to try and do something with audio herself for a while now.

Yesterday, Jamie sent me a DM on Twitter inviting me to check out her most recent blog post on content marketing that also included an audio version. It’s embedded here for you to listen:

Now I was watching Arsenal lose to Bayern München in the Champions League at the time the tweet came through but it being Jamie I decided to check the audio out right away. Within seconds Jamie’s voice had taken over the moment and I was focusing solely on this.

Now Jamie is a fantastic writer; I’m a keen reader. However, I let the pace of the audio guide me, the personality of the delivery and content seize my attention and followed it carefully to the very end.

How to Speed Up Your WordPress Website

The speed of your WordPress site is important. And it’s not just because visitors to your site have the attention span of gnats. No, even Google is increasingly placing more importance on your site speed as one of its key ranking criteria for search engine results.

Some of the biggest culprits that slow down your site are plugins, javascript, code and images that haven’t been optimized.

If you’re not sure how you site performs head along to Google’s Page Speed Tool and see how your wordpress site speed fairs.

A recent client was struggling with their bounce rate and following Google’s advice from the Page Speed Tool we were able to speed up the site and cut the bounce rate quite quickly. The site was even loading like lightening on mobile devices.

In this show I recommend some of the top WordPress plugins I’ve personally found affect page speed. I also talk about hosting options if you’re looking to increase page load time.

What if I Don’t Want a Website?

Now I’m a firm believer in content marketing. Blogs, podcasts, ebooks, digital training products, you name it; I think they’re important ways of generating leads and building a business.

There are, of course, small businesses out there that don’t want to embrace content marketing. Or don’t really need it.

If you don’t really want to bother with blogging, aren’t ready to see what social media can do for you, you might want to think about what you can do with a couple of web pages and an email sign-up form.
