After a month in France I got back this week to the Dog House Studio here in Stockholm and behind the mic for episode 98 of Online Marketing Communications.
I muse on some of the things we’ve learned working on an extensive email / ebook campaign with a client and then react to the latest news from Google – AKA “Increasingly The Dark Side of the Force”.
Thanks to all the listeners who wondered wondered where I’d gone! I love making this podcast and I’m glad so many of you enjoy listening.

Email Marketing Rocks
As MarketingSherpa noted in their email marketing survey:
email continues to endure, and even thrive, under such scrutiny, continually proving its worth through better delivery practices, more advanced design, and strategic integration with other channels (PDF link).
As businesses struggling to market ourselves online, we just can’t knock email because permission marketing (AKA “opt-in marketing”) is like shaking hands on a deal: you exchange an email address in anticipation of an ebook, a series of informative mails or free access to a webinar.
To see the work for yourself please check out the IKDO ebook campaign here.
The Early Bird Doesn’t Always Catch the Worm
How are you going to cope with those folks like me who check their email on their smart phone as soon they wake up and delete everything they don’t want to read ?
In the past it was so-called “best practice” to be in your target’s inbox first thing in the morning. Nowadays we’re seeing people weed out their mail as soon as they wake. How are you going to make your mail stand out ? What strategy have you got in place ?
Google have recently rolled out a tabbed inbox for users who use Gmail in the browser. Google automatically filter mail into: Primary, Social, Promotions, and Updates.
This has serious implications for email marketing because it’s very likely your message is going to end up under the Promotions tab.
I talk about what this means and how we might respond. I also suggest you check out Mike Stelzner’s post Gmail Tabs: A Game Plan for Marketers and a really great video he’s created.
