Writing Matters: Start a Company Newsletter

Company newsletters deserve respect. By newsletter, I don’t mean the advertising material that you dress up as “news” and distribute to clients in the hope of securing more business orders. No, I mean in-company newsletters that you distribute to your employees.

Newsletters aren’t just about advertising. They’re an excellent way of interacting with your staff, telling them stories about the organization they work for and the people they work with.

This is important for group cohesion and team building, just like social activities bring individuals together. No one wants to be lectured by management or cooped up in information meetings continually. Sometimes good old-fashioned words on a page (or screen) are enough to help bring people together and keep them up to date.

Too often teams lose focus or individuals begin to lose track of the company’s identity, particularly if they work for a large corporation. That’s why an in-house newsletter can be so important.

For example: HOT COFFEE is a small chain of stores across the country, selling coffee. Once a year all the managers are brought to the capital to share experiences, celebrate in the company’s success and pick up tips and policies to be implemented over the coming year.

Because of costs, not every employee from HOT COFFEE can attend a conference like this. It’s a shame, really, because they’d feel like the company cared more about them and their interests if they could attend. Hell, they might even work harder if they felt like they were investing their valuable time and energy in HOT COFFEE, be more loyal to the company.

Trouble is, it’s not financially viable to offer all staff in an organization something like this. Still, there are little things you can do. Like sending them a well-written, highly informative news letter, say, ever other month.
